We want to thank all of our loyal market, wholesale, and on-farm customers for purchasing our produce during the 2013 season. We are excited about the 2014 season and have been able to find a new employee who will be joining us for the 2014 growing season. We attended the December winter market at Rock Fish Valley Community Center (RVCC) and will be back the first Saturday each month from February through April 2014. During the months of November and December we were able to provide the Local Food Hub with Red Leaf Lettuce and other produce that was distributed to area schools and restaurants.
Out high tunnels are in full production and have been providing bountiful Lettuce, Kale, Chard, Turnips, Beets, Arugula and Spinach with a heavy emphasis on Head Lettuce. We are about to transplant over 1000 Lettuce plugs that should be available for market by mid February. We have the prettiest young beets I have ever grown during the winter; we have had the pleasure of enjoying them since Thanksgiving. We recently seeded about 500′ feet of Carrots that should be ready for harvest in April.
We continue to expand and experiment with growing during the Winter Months. We have been evaluating whether to invest in the newer LED lighting to extend the daylight hours to push our production. We are going to continue to expand our high tunnel footprint by adding additional high tunnels to our production. We have spent a huge amount of time and effort in developing our high tunnel production model. That effort could not have been achieved without the knowledge we have gained from our membership in the Virginia Association of Biological Farming (VABF), Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (SSAWG), Virginia Cooperative Extension Service, and collaboration with other growers.
We have two 20′ x 96′ high tunnels and a new 24′ x 48′ that is being used to grow Raspberries, we feel fortunate to work closely with Virginia Cooperative extension, Dr. Reza Rafie, and Chris Mullins of Virginia State University’s Agriculture School.
We have mixed Lettuce, head Lettuce, Kale, Carrots, Pac Choi and Turnips growing and being harvested in the two larger high tunnels. You can come by the farm or visit retailers like Integral Yoga in Charlottesville.
We have lots and lots of plugs getting ready to transplant out in the fields as soon as we feel the weather has turned the corner.. Mother Nature can fool us sometimes, but the age-old signs say we have turned the corner. We will be cautious as to what we transplant and when keeping those row covers ready if we get a hard frost. Twin Springs Farm is a 76 acre diversified farm located in beautiful Nelson County Virginia. We use sustainable farming practices; we do not use harmful herbicides or pesticides. Our growing method includes the use of Cover Crops, Compost, Compost Tea, Alfalfa Meal, and Trace Elements & Micronutrients.
We grow Blueberries, Strawberries, Lettuce, Spinach, Greens and other produce that we sell through direct market, farm markets, and wholesale. We have salad greens available year around utilizing unheated high tunnels during the fall and winter months.
We currently attend the Lexington and Nelson Farm Markets.
